The photograph is part of a set taken for the National Buildings Record. A note in the Bedford Lemere daybook records that the negatives were handed to the NBR for safe deposit during the War. The church was designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor with the main body of it built in 1714-18. In May 1941, shortly after the photograph was taken, it was hit by a bomb and the interior gutted by fire.
