Description

Sir John Franklin was a British Royal Navy officer who led two expeditions to the Canadian Arctic, and a third, unsuccessful, expedition to attempt a traverse of the Northwest Passage in 1845. It was during this third expedition that Franklin's ships became trapped in the ice. Franklin died in June 1847, and the ships were subsequently abandoned. The entire crew eventually perished, from causes such as scurvy, starvation, and hypothermia.
