The site was at the centre of the 'Battle of Orgreave' on the 18th June 1984. Striking miners picketed the British Steel Corporation coking plant in an attempt to prevent coke being transported to the British Steel works at Scunthorpe. The result was a violent confrontation between the pickets and police. Nearly 100 pickets were charged following the events of that day, but the trails collapsed after evidence given by the police was deemed to be unreliable.
