Tanning coppers were used for dying and preserving fishing nets and clothing using a resin which stained the water to a dark brown. The nets and clothes were soaked in the solution to protect them against the ravages of sea water. This is likely to be the one originally built in 1920 and restored to commemorate the Millenium.
