Description

The tower, which opened in 1966, was constructed as a communications tower intended to support the microwave aerials which were used to carry long distance telephone and television networks between London and the provinces. It became a one of London's top tourist attractions with more than 50000 people visiting the observation gallery or restaurant in the first three weeks of opening. Public access ceased in 1981. Over the years it has been known as the GPO Tower, the Post Office Tower and Telecom Tower.
