Description

Brockhall Village is on the site of the former Brockhall Hospital. The hospital opened as 'Brockhall Institution' in 1904. It was originally an 'institution' for 'inebriate women' under the Inebriates Act of 1898. In the 1920s the hospital formally became an 'institution' for 'mental defectives' – people who would be considered in the 21st century as having learning disabilities. In 1948 Brockhall joined the NHS and became known as Brockhall Hospital. It closed in 1992 and the site was redeveloped as Brockhall Village.
