Description

The token catcher is a safety device originally used on a single track section of the Severn Valley Railway. As a train passed, the firemen on board would deposit a token onto the catcher. The signalman would then go and collect it and notify the signalman further along the line that the train had passed through his section of track. The ladder and lamp on the right are to provide access for the signalman to recover the token and illuminate the catcher for the signalman and fireman. It is now sited opposite Bewdley North Signal Box, previously it was located opposite Bewdley South Signal Box. The token equipment involved is the Tyers No. 9 electric key token apparatus, still used on many heritage railways.
