The station opened in 1865 and was closed by the British Railways Board in 1973. It reopened in 1977 as the western terminus of the Watercress Line, a heritage railway which runs between Alton and New Alresford in Hampshire. The former goods shed is now used as a shop and also provides tourist facilities.
