The station opened in 1842, and was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The station building situated in the platform island has eleven by three bays, faced in Swindon sandstone. The side elevation has a wide pediment across all three bays, and has a projecting middle bay. The long platforms have canopies supported with cast iron columns.
