The station opened in 1856 and is situated on the London, Tilbury and Southend Railway. It was originally the eastern terminus of the railway line and has a bay platform, or a dead-end platform, and three other platforms. The platforms have a canopy with rows of two columns and round-headed arches that extend from the platform building. At the eastern end of Platform 3 is the station building.
