The station was built in 1896 by Henry Shelmerdine and replaced an earlier building dated 1848. It has two storeys of red brick and stands at street level. The rear elevation is irregular and has a central set of stairs that leads to the platforms in the cutting, with tunnels under the two end sections of the station building.
