The station first opened in 1837 and was rebuilt in 1867, with the buildings on the current Platforms 5 and 6 and screen walls dating from this time. The station underwent further refurbishment in the 1980's, with a steel structure added to the Nantwich Road entrance of the station between 1983 and 1985. Six of twelve platform extensions that dated to the early 1900's were removed in 1985. Further changes were made to the station in the early 21st century.
