Description

The hall was originally constructed between 1373 and 1380, during John of Gaunt's ownership of the Kenilworth Castle and his extensive construction works at the site, transforming the medieval castle into a fortified palatial complex. In circa 1400, an elevated floor was inserted into the hall to create a storage basement below, remaining in this form throughout the medieval period, as depicted in this reconstruction. This illustration was reproduced on page 8 of the 1991 and 1997 English Heritage site guidebooks for Kenilworth Castle.
