Description

The illustration is reproduced as colour plate 3 in the 1993 English Heritage book 'Glastonbury' by Philip Rahtz.

In 1191 the abbot of Glastonbury, Henry de Soilly, supposedly based on secret information from King Henry II, ordered the monks to dig between two stone pyramids to uncover the bodies of Arthur and Guinevere. The event is now largely accepted to have been a hoax and an attempt by the abbey to increase its prestige and visitor numbers.
