Description

Built in 1855, the colliery was closed in 1962 and most of the buildings were demolished, the engine house was preserved with the intervention of Frank Atkinson, founder of the Beamish Museum, applying for listed building status. In 1976 the building was dismantled and reconstructed as an exhibit at the Beamish Open Air Museum a short distance to the north alongside a heapstead, a structure in which coal was weighed, sifted and graded, relocated from Ravensworth Park Mine in Gateshead.
