Description

To mark 150 years since the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830 British Rail organised a ‘cavalcade’ of British locomotives at the location of the Rainhill Trails of 1829. The event took place over 24-26th May 1980 and featured replicas of three locomotives that took part in the trials, Braithwaite and Ericsson’s ‘Novelty,’ Timothy Hackworth’s ‘Sans Pareil’ and the eventual winner George Stephen’s ‘Rocket’. Around 40 other preserved steam and diesel locomotives formed the ‘cavalcade’ seen by spectators from temporary seating erected on either side of the track.
