EGLINGHAM EGLINGHAM VILLAGE NU 1019 (South side, off) 19/172 Crisp headstone 1.5 metres south of east end of chancel of Church of St. Maurice GV II
Headstone, 1722. Sandstone. Gable-topped stone with raised ornament on edge and sunk arched panel flanked by pilasters; inscription to Samual Crisp, son of Richard Crisp of Hedgely, above verse:
Affliction Sore with Patie nce Borne Physition was in Wain til Death Gave Ease When God Did please to Free him From his paine.
Reverse has sunk triangular panel with central stylised mask flanked by death's head and crossed bones.
An early version of the ubiquitous rhyme.
