SWIMBRIDGE SWIMBRIDGE NEWLAND SS 63 SW 8/214 Rocky Side
II
Farmhouse, now private dwelling. Probably early C16, remodelled in c17 with C20 alterations. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Slate roof. House faces away from road with tall lateral rubble hall stack to front with offsets. Brick stack at left end. Through-passage, hall and inner room, and room over cart entrance'.
Lower end, formerly farm buildings, entirely rebuilt to form separate cottage (not included in list description). 2 storeys. 4-window range. C20 fenestration except for half dormer which has a C19 2-light casement, 6-panes per light to its lower half. 2-light timber mullion window at right end. Large double plank doors to cart entrance.
Interior: stop chamfered beams to hall and inner room. Old chamfered doorframes to rear of inner room, between hall and inner room and from through-passage to hall, and stop chamfered door surround to stair turret doorway to rear of hall, similar surround to upper storey rear passage doorway. 2 raised cruck trusses over hall and inner room, that over the latter has fragment of moulded plasterwork cornice surviving to foot of rear blade. The truss over lower end has some slight smoke- blackening, with collar tenoned into soffit mortices to the blades, the other truss is clean and has lap-jointed collar, so is possibly an early C17 replacement.
Another truss to the gable end of the main range forms a closed partition with the chamber over the cart entrance, but cannot be closely inspected. The 2 principal trusses have threaded purlins and ridge purlin partly intact. To the base of the stair turret on the former outside wall now enclosed by dairy, a small timber 2- light window with pointed arches to the lights has been plastered over on the dairy side.
