5407 (South Side) No 1 (The Bear Hotel) SU 1869 1/127 II GV 2.
Late C19 Jacobean and Georgian. Corner site with the Parade. 3 storeys grey headers, red brick dressings, stuccoed 2nd floor. Gable end tiled roofs.
Front to High Street: 2nd floor has 3 gabled pedimented semi-dormers, 2-light casements, moulded cornices on shaped consoles. Brick cornice and frieze over 1st floor. 4 tall transomed casements on 1st floor with fanlights over 2 bottom lights, keystones to flat arches. Ground floor has 3 architrave framed sashes, glazing bars. The ground and 1st floor windows in common surrounds of rusticated red brick. Door with flanking lights all framed by pilasters, curved hood on shaped brackets over.
Parade elevation: gable end to corner, 2 bays as on High Street front. Remainder of Parade elevation: brick ground and 1st floor paired tile hung gables to overhanging stuccoed 2nd floor. Bargeboards to gables. 2 4-light casements projecting on 3 consoles each to 2nd floor. The base of overhang has moulded beam carried on 4 carved brackets. 1st floor 2 wood oriel bay windows, the bases supported on carved keystones of 2 ground floor windows. Coat of Arms between. On ground floor 2 large semi-circular arched windows each of 4 mullioned and transomed lights. Central door with moulded flat hood supported on long carved brackets.
Side lights flanking doorway. To left of front one architrave framed sash window with glazing bars on ground floor.
Garden front: gable end with tile hung 2nd floor carried on moulded beam returned from Parade front. Wood casements in gable. 1st and ground floor windows, architrave framed sashes, glazing bars, flat brick arches.
Nos 1 to 12 (consec) form a group, with the Town Hall, and Nos 131 to 144 (consec), and Midland Bank.
