GODALMING HURTMORE ROAD SU 94 SE (south side, off) 2/148 Statue of William Haig-Brown outside South Africa cloister at Charterhouse School GV II

Statue. 1900 by H Bates and students. Ashlar and bronze. Stepped, swept plinth with inscription panel and roll-moulded cornice. Seated bronze figure of William Haig-Brown, gowned and holding model of the school chapel in his right hand. Haig-Brown was headmaster 1864-97 and moved the school from London to its present location in 1872. The statue was modelled by H Bates, but he died before completing the work and the actual statue was produced by his students (information from school).
