LITTLE BERKHAMSTED BUCKS ALLEY TL 20 NE (North side) Little Berkhamsted 7/83 The Gage and The Flat 20.10.52 (formerly listed as Gage House.) - II

House. Early C16, floored and heated in C17, altered and extended late C18, C19 and C20. Timber frame with brick additions, rendered. Tiled roofs. Hall house with lower wing, additions at upper end. All 2 storeys. 3 bay hall range has entrance in original screens passage position to left, 6 panelled door, C18 doorcase with dentilled cornice, C19 tiled hood. 2 and 3 light casements, ground floor architraves with cornices. Close eaves. Large C17 axial stack to centre of hall with rebuilt multiple diagonal shafts. To right a gable to front over upper end, ground floor projecting rectangular bay addition, first floor 2 light architraved casement, bargeboards. To far right a small window on first floor with old leaded panes. Lower crosswing to left is set back slightly, ground floor projecting rectangular bay addition, first floor 2 light casement, bargeboarded gable. Left return has a large external stack with C19 diagonal shafts with a projection to right with a relieving arch. Crosswing extends further to rear, ground floor canted bay and first floor 3 light casement. C19 additions to rear of hall.

Ground floor lean-to outshut open to right with steps up to a recessed entrance with moulded timber porch, 2/3 glazed doors to rear end of screens passage. Three first floor 2 light casements each in a separate gable, stack with diagonal shafts where hall meets lower wing to rear.

C18 service block addition to upper end projects slightly to front with ground floor paired small pane architraved casements. Two first floor 2 light leaded pane casements. Right end stack with 2 diagonal shafts.

Twin gabled right end with scattered sashes and casements, lean-to outshuts. A separate block added to rear of original upper end. 2 storeys. 1 bay of casements with a gable to garden. Further C20 addition to rear. Interior: late C17 or early C18 bolection moulded panelling, early C19 doorcases, late C19 staircase. Formerly known as Gazes Place.
