CHESTER CITY (IM)

SJ4066SE EASTGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/184 (South side) 10/01/72 Nos.40, 42 & 44 Street and Nos.42-48 (even) Row (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET No.38 Street & No.44 Row) (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET No.36 Street & No.42 Row) (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET Nos 46 & 48 Row)

GV II

3 undercroft shops; 3, now 2 Row shops with part of department store, Nos 32-40 Eastgate Row (qv), in third storey and offices in fourth storey, probably early C20. Timber frame with plaster panels; grey slate roof, with 3 front gables from main ridge parallel with street. 4 storeys including undercroft and Row, of 3 bays. The undercroft and Row storeys have no visible features of special interest; No.40 Street has 7 sandstone steps to Row. The boxed bressumer over the Row front supports the close- studded third storey which has one cross-rail, 3 shallow 5-light mullioned and transomed leaded oriels. The close-studded fourth storey, boldly jettied on 4 quadrant brackets, has one cross-rail and 3 mullioned 5-light leaded casements standing proud of the wall-face. The 3 front gables have panelled herringbone struts; plain bargeboards. Correct but low key, in contrast with the earlier C19 frontages in Eastgate Street. INTERIORS have no visible features of special interest. HISTORICAL NOTE: alterations to No.42 Row by PH Lockwood for Phillipson and Golden were approved 15/9/1909, and plans for rebuilding No.48 Row by W Lockwood for R Bolland, Sons and Co.

3/4/1912.
