TM2532NE CHURCH STREET 609-1/1/14 (South West side) 20/06/72 No.26
Trinity House dormitory, former house, c1500 and late C16. Timber-framed with rendered brick front and roofs or concrete pantiles with 2 markedly differing ridge lines. PLAN: 2 storeys with long rear extension with gabled peg-tile roof and short parallel 2-storey range with slate roof. EXTERIOR: front has parapet and raised band above first-floor window heads. 3 double-hung sash windows with small panes and blind window screen on first floor. Ground floor has 2 similar windows, a garage door and recessed entrance with 6-panel door. Early C19 moulded architrave and flat hood. Passage door with 4 panels and fanlight. Flanks of rear extension have C20 pargeting, possibly a replica of former fragment. One half of frontage range is one bay of a long wall jetty house of late C15 or early C16. One flank truss is closed but with former central door opening on first floor. Other flank was 'open' with arch braces to tie beams. Roof was of crown post type and may survive in part. To rear, at right-angles, is late C16 two-storey timber frame and 3 bays, formerly jettied at W end with framed bressumer of one large quadrant moulding. INTERIOR: the W bay formed one small chamber on each floor and upper has curious internal wall bracing, curving up from wall posts and then down to stop at a stud. 'Tye' beams are tenoned into top plates and substantially contemporary roof with simple collar rafter couples. One frieze window of 3 lights survives on flank wall of larger first-floor chamber. Entrance hall has early C19 arch on shaped corbels with dentilled soffit.
