WETHERINGSETT-CUM-BROCKFORD BROCKFORD STREET (east TM 16 NW side) 6/110 - Yew Tree Farmhouse

GV II

Former farmhouse. 2 phases of mid C16 work comprising a 3-bay house at right angles to road and a 2-bay hall range added to left. Later alterations include remodelling to create a uniform road frontage, with mid C19 facade.

Timber framed, the facade cased in gault brick, the remainder roughcast- rendered. Roof glazed black pantiled to front, the remainder plaintiled.

Pierced wavy bargeboards to front block. 2 storeys and attics. Hall range formerly jettied to front. 3 windows, inset 6-paned sashes under stucco lintols with keys. Doorway has semi-glazed panelled door, plain overlight, a doorcase with plain surround and heavy console-bracketed cornice. C18 stack against left gable end. Main stack to rear, at junction of the 2 ranges, has a C20 white brick shaft. Interior. Much of structure in earlier phase is concealed. The front bay was a parlour: some good close studding on upper floor with reverse-curved braces. Remaining 2 bays have widely-spaced studding. Centre bay seems to have been a one-bay open hall as there is evidence that the upper floor is later. Fragmentary evidence suggests this bay contained a timber flue or smokehood, and the roof timbers are smoke- stained. Rear bay, probably a service cell, has exposed upper framing and intact roof with clasped purlins and cranked wind braces. Hall addition has closely-spaced chamfered joists in main room and close studding exposed on upper floor; late C17 upper ceiling, roof reconstructed C18-C19.
