Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

ST LEVAN ROSKESTAL SW 32 SE 7/205 Roskestal Farmhouse, including - front garden walls and gate-piers GV II Farmhouse, including front garden walls and gate-piers. C17, extended in the C18.

Pebble-dashed front, rendered gable ends, granite rubble rear wing, granite dressings. Scantle slate roofs. Front range has C17 dressed granite chimneys with simple entablature over the gable ends. Scrolled granite kneelers at the front.

Heightened eaves.

Plan: L-shaped plan. 2-room plan C17 range at the front with probably parlour on the left, hall on the right with cross passage between leading to stair outshut in the rear angle and C17 or C18 service wing or granary at right angles behind the left-hand side with granite steps up to its loft. Remains of wall at rear right of the wing suggest a formerly enclosed rear courtyard.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window south east front with central doorway. C17 chamfered doorway and C17 chamfered 3-light mullioned window on the left. Other openings have circa late C19 or C20 horned sashes. Left-hand gable end has two C17 chamfered window openings.

Rear wing has reused chamfered stones to right-hand wall. The other original openings are constructed of unchamfered granite monoliths. There is a chamfered doorway through high courtyard wall behind the right-hand rear corner of the house.

There is some reused C17 masonry in the farm buildings at Roskestal.

Low cement coped granite rubble walls surround rectangle garden at the front of the house. The gateway (aligned with doorway of house) has round-headed granite monolithic piers.

Interior: has possibly late C18 stair, otherwise C19 and C20 carpentry and joinery.

Possibly there are earlier features not visible.
