WALSALL MB BRADFORD STREET (east side) SP 0198 SW 15/12 Nos 24 - 30 (consecutive)

GV II Includes No 17 Newport Street and Nos 1 and la Caldmore Road. (Belsize House) Row of shops and offices. 1830s, built by John Eglington on land acquired in 1832. Stuccoed brick. A symmetrical composition with emphasised centre and end blocks. Three storeys, with cornice and blocking course. End blocks each of three bays, separated by Doric pilasters on ground floor and Corinthian pilasters on upper floors. Ground floor has channelled rustication. Ground floor windows have segmental heads. First floor windows have architraves.

All are sashed with glazing bars. Left-hand block (No 17 Newport Street) has three bays facing Newport Street, the right-hand one blind on the first and second floors. In the middle bay is an Ionic doorcase. Right-hand block (No 1 Caldmore Road) has middle ground floor window replaced by doorway, and one bay facing Caldmore Road. The middle block (No 27 Bradford Street) is of three bays, with channelled rustication and Doric pilasters on the ground floor and paired pilaster strips above. The windows are sashed with glazing bars.

The porch has paired columns, now with plain blocks as capitals. To left nad right are three-bay links to the end blocks. All have C20 shop fronts on the ground floor. Sashed windows with glazing bars remain on the first floor, except for No 29, but on the second floor only No 26 retains its sash. History: Jerome K Jerome was born at No 1 Caldmore Road in 1859.
