In November 1953, Laing was awarded a contract for two aircraft hangars at Gaydon Airfield; construction started at the beginning of 1954. The hangars were to be 240 feet long, with a span of 160 feet and a maximum height at the crown of 45 feet. The foundations of each hangar were 13 feet deep, and the buildings were each constructed using 14 reinforced concrete columns and 7 tubular steel trusses. The doors and roof covering were of galvanised steel and the walls were of Easiform construction.
