Description

On 30th November 1951, the cooling water intake caisson for Coryton Oil Refinery was moved across the Thames from the dry dock at the Red Lion Wharf, Gravesend, to Tilbury Docks. The removal of the caisson from Gravesend to Tilbury marked the completion of the first stages in the unit's construction. The structure was towed with shuttering fixed, ready for continuation of concreting at Tilbury.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
