John Laing and Son Ltd had started opencast mining operations in 1942 to meet wartime needs. The work was expanded by the company after the war and this site opened in late 1948 - early 1949 near Shipley, 3 miles from another Laing opencast mine at Carrington's Coppice. 'Office Site' was so called due to its proximity to Office Coppice.
