Description

The Lanchester Building was designed by the architect Basil Spence with Ove Arup and Partners as consulting engineers. It was built by Laing for the University of Southampton to house the Departments of Electronics and other engineering departments. The foundations of the building were laid in Autumn 1957, Laing's building work commenced in February 1958 and it was opened in the summer of 1959. The four-storey block, located beside existing engineering workshops, included laboratories, lecture rooms, studies, offices and a projecting lecture theatre at first floor level, forming the entrance canopy.
