Description

John William Laing (1879-1978) was a builder and civil engineering contractor who took over the running of the Laing family construction business from his father in 1908. He is seen here standing on the steps of Coventry Cathedral at the end of its construction, one of his company's most important building contracts. John Laing was a religious man who built a number of churches on a non-profit making basis and the profits from the Coventry Cathedral contract were donated back to the cathedral.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
