Description

The contract for the first phase of Carlisle's Civic Centre was awarded to John Laing and Son Ltd. The scheme included an octagonal council chamber on stilts, linked to a two-storey civic suite and an 11-storey block of offices. 'Storiform' formwork was used to construct the 11-storey block, which consisted of a reinforced concrete frame with mosaic cladding and precast exposed aggregate panels. The building which was designed by architects Charles B Pearson and Son of Manchester replaced the town hall and various local government departments scattered around the city of Carlisle.
