The Maternity Unit had 173 beds mostly on six-bed wards but with many single rooms with their own bathroom. Each floor had a lounge-cum-dining room with a balcony. Of the 10 lifts within the building 3 were large enough for beds, the “latest idea being to wheel the patient on their bed rather than use stretchers.” This photograph appears in the September 1966 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter
