Description

Laing's Southern Region started building the Aylesbury Estate in 1967. At the time it was the largest industrialised housing scheme ever undertaken by a London Borough, providing homes for more than 7000 people, comprising of low and high-rise linear blocks from four to fourteen-storeys high containing flats and maisonettes. The 'Centre Building', shown in the photograph, is referred to by Laing in August 1969 in their monthly newsletter 'Team Spirit'. It incorporated boiler rooms, 170 ft chimney and an amenity section including a boy's club and community centre.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
