Description

A unique form of dome construction was used for the domed roof at the London Central Mosque. The prayer hall was first covered with a rectangular concrete slab supported by four columns. The slab had a circular hole in the centre around which a drum was erected using precast Lytag panels. The dome itself was then shaped using eight tubular steel ribs, cladding, and finished with a gold-coloured copper sheeting. The roof was built prior to the construction of the walls, therefore extensive support work was needed to hold it up.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
