Description

The widening of Pier 6 of Terminal 3 was one of four contracts completed by Laing in the late 1970s and early 1980s. A 220m stretch of the pier was widened by 6-9m on the ground floor and by 19-32m on the first floor, using a structural steel frame, which provided space for three additional wide-bodied jet stands. The pier was demolished in the early 21st century and a new pier built to accommodate the Airbus A380 aircraft. A similar photograph was published in the December 1980 edition of 'Team Spirit', the Laing employee newsletter.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
