Description

The Patchway commercial and industrial estate was owned by Laing Development who leased a portion of the site to Hypermarket Holdings who operated the Carrefour supermarkets in England. Laing also won the £4.1m contract for the construction and work began in March 1977, due for completion and handover in May 1978. The river Trym had to be diverted and a sewer and water main moved to avoid damage during construction. The construction was simple with pad foundations, steel frame and asbestos and brick cladding. The 167,000sqm building housed an 8,200sqm sales floor, storage areas and a mezzanine level with a restaurant and staff offices.
