Description

Construction of a new terminal building and piers, extensions to runways, and a new Maglev system at Birmingham Airport began in May 1981. The new terminal building was located on the opposite side of the site to the existing terminal at Elmdon, and was later known as Terminal 1. The contract was completed 18 weeks ahead of schedule and the official handover ceremony took place on 11th January 1984. This photograph was published in the March 1984 edition of 'Team Spirit', the Laing employee newsletter. It shows, from left to right, O Whitehead, J Renshaw, S Doughty, F McLoughlin and M Tredwell.
