The store was opened on the 24th January 1984. Constructed on the sloped site of a former brickworks the groundworks were a major undertaking, moving 50,000 cubic metres of rock infill and constructing a 6m high retaining wall 150m along the road adjacent to the site. The store has been considerably altered since, with the majority of the underground carpark pictured now exposed and the store itself occupying the space that was formerly parking below it. The entrance to the store is at this lower level with a restaurant at the original floor level.
