Description

The 30,000sq ft Litchfield Safeway was completed in November 1988 with all mod cons, cash machines, in-store toilets and barcode readers on every checkout giving itemised receipts. An iron foundry occupying the site had to be demolished before the concrete pad foundations could go in and the steel frame erected. As soon as the Lichfield store was completed Laing were awarded the contract for another store in Walsall. Safeway were taken over by Morrisons in 2004 and their 428 shops rebranded, another 51 had to be sold under competition regulations.

This photograph was used in the May 1989 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company newsletter.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
