Description

The brick walling behind the staircase is temporary due to the phased construction at the site. This is the location of the King's Library, George III's collection of 60,000 books that were bequeathed to the nation in 1823 by George IV. This collection is now housed in a glazed 6 floor tower within the heart of the building with the bookshelves visible from the balconies around it on all four sides. This tower was constructed in a later phase and the walling removed to expose it.

This photograph was used in the April 1989 issue of Team Spirit, the Laing company Newsletter.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
