A contract for a new bypass of the A1 at Wetherby, to relieve congestion at the A58 roundabout, began in 1986. The scheme involved new bridges, dual carriageway, and slip roads. In 1990, Laing Civil Engineering were awarded the Institution of Civil Engineers, Yorkshire and Humberside Region Award for the Wetherby Bypass contract.
