Description

Laing was awarded the contract for the redevelopment of the interior of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in November 1989. The exterior portico built in 1911 was retained though the rest of the building had been demolished in 1988. The octagonal sanctuary contains a lower seating area, a gallery and an extended sanctuary behind panelling, which can be used to alter the size of the sanctuary depending on the congregation. The ark doors, designed by Amit Schur, are made of metals set in bronze frames; the ark was designed as the focus of the wall. The interior of the synagogue was completed in January 1991.
