Description

Laing Eastern undertook the £4.9m contract for the construction on behalf of Gateway Foodmarkets Ltd for completion by August 1990. Restructuring of the Gateway company at this time led to the launch of the Somerfield brand. The first Somerfield store was built in Burnham on Sea, Somerset in 1990 with the East Dereham store opening soon after that. Morrisons acquired the store in 2000 and made substantial alterations to the exterior, extending it on the north and east sides and changing the entrance. No alterations were made to the petrol station, however, and the shape of the canopy still mirrors the roof of the original store entrance.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
