Edward the Confessor died in January 1066 and was buried in front of the High Altar of his original Norman church of Westminster. His body has been moved several times inside Westminste. The first notable time was when King Henry III built the past king a new shrine, to which Edward was moved to in October 1269. When the Benedictine structure was removed from the English church the shrine was removed, but it was reassembled in a short period of time when Mary I assumed the throne. The shrine seems to be decorated with mosaic on the lower half, and the top half is carved. His coffin lies in the top-most part of this shrine today, with five other kings and four queens also buried in his chapel.
