Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Air ambulance from Scilly Islands to mainland used for first time. When Mrs. Phillips of St. Mary’s, Isles of Scilly, was taken suddenly ill and had to be sent to the Penzance Hospital, she was brought across from the Islands in an aeroplane. This is the first time a flying ambulance has been used between the Islands and the main land. Hitherto emergency ambulance cases have had to be transported by motor-boat, life-boat or special charter of the mail steamer, which frequently involves a stormy journey of 3 to 7 hours. The aeroplane did the trip in 20 minutes. An ambulance was waiting at St. Just aerodrome, Penzance to convey the patient to the West Cornwall Hospital. Photo shows:- Mrs. Phillips being taken out of the ‘plane on arrival at St. Just aerodrome.”

The first air ambulance services in the United Kingdom began in Scotland in 1933 with a flight from Orkney. High-resolution copies of this image are available for free for non-commercial use. Please Enquire to place an order.
