Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Reunion at Highgate Hospital. Photo shows:- A group of past and present members of the staff photographed when nurses at Highgate Hospital (London, N.) held their reunion on Saturday.”

The St Pancras Union Infirmary opened in 1869 and has undergone multiple changes in name during its history. Edith Cavell, celebrated nurse of the First World War, worked as Night Sister at the Infirmary in 1901. After London County Council took control of the Infirmary in 1930, it was renamed ‘Highgate Hospital’ and later grouped with nearby hospitals to form the Whittington Hospital, of which Highgate Hospital formed the Highgate Wing.
