The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Nurses prepare to entertain their patients. Nurses at the West London Hospital are busy practising old English carols to sing in their wards at Xmas. Photo shows:- Nurses at the West London hospital gathered round the organ in the little hospital chapel practising new carols to music played by one of the sisters. They will sing to the wards at Xmas.”

The West London hospital opened in 1856 as the Fulham and Hammersmith General Dispensary in Queen Street. The hospital moved to bigger premises in Hammersmith Road in 1860 and was repeatedly extended and added to throughout the rest of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century.
