Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Catholic hospital leads the way. First clinic of its kind in the country. The new Rheumatism and Arthritis clinic – the first of its kind in the country – has been opened at the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, St John’s Wood, London. A feature of the clinic will be a “hobby” room, where stiffened limbs and muscles will be loosened by therapeutic treatment. A research laboratory and unit attached to the department is being maintained for seven years by the Empire Rheumatism Council. Photo shows:- A view of St. Andrews Ward for arthritis cases.”

The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was founded in 1856. In 1939, the Empire Rheumatism Council – founded in 1936 – awarded the hospital a grant for research into occupational therapy in rheumatic disease. However, the Rheumatism Ward at the hospital was temporarily closed in 1940 whilst the hospital was used to treat injured military personnel. See also MED01/01/0091 and MED01/01/0093-0099.
