The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.
The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “The Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, St. John’s Wood, London. Photo shows:- The interior of the beautiful hospital church – the Church of the Knights of Malta."
The Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was founded in 1856. In 1939, the Empire Rheumatism Council – founded in 1936 – awarded the hospital a grant for research into occupational therapy in rheumatic disease. However, the Rheumatism Ward at the hospital was temporarily closed in 1940 whilst the hospital was used to treat injured military personnel. The chapel was built in 1862 and was dedicated to St John of Jerusalem, after the hospital became associated with the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. The hospital’s name was changed from The Hospital of St Elizabeth to reflect this. See also MED01/01/0091-0093 and MED01/01/0095-0099.
